Waxhaw Animal Hospital is our community's wonderful animal hospital, located in the heart of Waxhaw, NC for over 35 years.  We love being your other family doctor! We strive to provide the best information and lifelong veterinary care to your pets and your family!  We are a member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), and continue to advance our skills and technology to keep your pets' health options convenient and affordable.

  • Dr. Tanya S. Burtis, DVM

    Dr. Burtis grew up in central Michigan, where she learned to care for the cows at the neighboring dairy farm, as well as many other animals through a strong 4H program.  She went on to major in Biology and Psychology, with a minor in Biochemistry, and concentrations in Political Science and Theatre at Hope College in Western Michigan, then graduated from Michigan State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. She and her new family then moved to North Carolina and she began as an associate veterinarian with Dr. Tapley in 1997.  She now owns the practice, and is dedicated to continually offer the best medicine to all of our clients' pets for their entire lifetime.  Dr. Burtis has completed advanced training in ultrasonography, echocardiography, dental procedures, emergency medicine, and many more areas, all of which she thoroughly enjoys because they help better serve her patients and clients.  She lives here in Waxhaw with her husband and three children, two dogs, and one cat.  She loves quiet time at home when she is not at the hospital or busy with the family, and helping to decide lines of high quality, veterinary-approved pet products for Reigning Cats & Dogs Pet Boutique.

  • Dr. Sonia Borrell, DVM

    Dr. Sonia Borrell was born and raised in Miami, FL. She graduated from the University of Miami and attended St. Matthews University School of Veterinary Medicine as part of the charter class. She was then accepted to the clinical year program at NC State School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Borrell has been practicing in the Charlotte area for 4 years. Dr. Borrell's interests include Exotic Animal Medicine, treating species such as reptiles, birds and small mammals. She believes strongly in the importance of husbandry and its education to treat these special pets. She is member of AVMA, AEMV (Association of Exotic Animal Veterinarians), and AAV (Association of Avian Vets). Her other areas of interest are pathology and disease processes. Dr. Borrell is USDA certified to complete health certificates for both national and international travel for both companion and food animals. She is completely fluent in Spanish and is able to provide Spanish speaking clients with a thorough and comprehensive understanding of preventive care and emergency care. Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Borrell is an avid crafter ranging from rock tumbling and jewelry making to knitting and crocheting. She has 2 beautiful rescue cats, Guzo and Gracie that have her well trained in the feline world.

  • Dr. Glenn D. Baron, DVM

    Dr. Glenn Baron graduated from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1977. He moved immediately to North Carolina and soon started working at Mathews Animal Clinic doing large and small animal medicine. From 1991 until 2001 he was the practice owner, but then decided to make a career switch.  He got a Masters in Elementary Education and became a fifth grade teacher. Today he is a full time teacher and a part-time veterinarian. He works with us at Waxhaw Animal Hospital on the weekends and during the summer. He lives in Waxhaw with his wife on the horse farm called Gone to Ground Farm. He and Joan have two adult children, Katie and Patrick.

  • Jason Burtis

    Practice Manager / Vet Camp Curriculum Coordinator
    Jason is Dr. Burtis' husband, and has been helping to manage the hospital since 2007.  He also currently enjoys helping their children with many activities, including being his son's Den Leader in Cub Scout Pack 100.  Before working as manager with Waxhaw Animal Hospital, Jason was a Teacher of Spanish and French at Weddington High School, Charlotte Christian School, and a High School Theatre Director & Spanish / French teacher in Michigan.  He has enjoyed the teaching and development aspect of management and working on our VetCamp Program, and is committed to advancing Waxhaw Animal Hospital as the premier animal hospital in our area.

  • Cindy Byler

    Director of Administration 
    Cindy is a native to this area growing up in Monroe, NC. She graduated from Parkwood High School in 1993 and began working at Waxhaw Animal Hospital in 2005. She lives in Lancaster with her Husband. They have 3 dogs and 3 cats.
